Overview

Acute sinusitis causes swelling and inflammation of the space inside your nose (sinus). This interferes with drainage and causes a buildup of mucus.

With acute sinusitis, it can be difficult to breathe through your nose. The area around your eyes and face may feel swollen, and you may have jaw, face pain, or a headache.

Acute Sinusitis

Acute sinusitis is mostly caused by allergens, dust, smoke, fragrance, or the common cold. Unless a bacterial infection develops, most cases are resolved within 4 days to 10 days. Acute sinusitis signs and symptoms often include:

  • Thick, yellow, or green mucus from the nose (runny nose) or back of the throat (postnasal drainage)
  • Blocked or stuffy nose (congestion) that makes it difficult to breathe through your nose
  • Pain, tenderness, swelling, and pressure around your eyes, cheeks, nose, or forehead that increases with bending over

Causes

Acute sinusitis is most often caused by the common cold, which is an infection caused by a virus. In some cases, infection with bacteria develops.

Risk Factors

Your risk of getting sinusitis may be increased if you have:

  • Hay fever or other allergic Condition, which affects your sinuses
  • A common Cold, which affects your sinuses
  • Abnormalities of the nasal passages, such as a deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps, or tumors
  • Medical conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, or an immune system disorder such as HIV/AIDS
  • Exposure to smoke, either from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke

Complications

Complications of acute sinusitis are uncommon, and serious complications are rare. If they happen, Complications may include:

  • Chronic sinusitis. Acute sinusitis can be a flare-up of a long-term problem called chronic sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis lasts longer than 10 weeks.
  • Meningitis. This infection causes swelling of the membranes and fluid surrounding your brain and spinal cord.
  • Other infections. Uncommonly, an infection can spread to the bones (osteomyelitis) or the skin (cellulitis).
  • Vision problems. If the infection spreads to your eye socket, it can cause loss of vision or even blindness that can be permanent.

Prevention

Take these steps to help reduce your risk of acute sinusitis:

  • Avoid upper respiratory infections. Try to stay away from people who have colds or are sick with other infections. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating food.

  • Avoid cigarette smoke and polluted air. Tobacco smoke and other pollutants can irritate and irritate your lungs and nasal passages.
