Sinusitis or migraine?
Migraine and headaches from sinusitis are easy to confuse because the signs and symptoms of the two types of headaches may overlap.
Both migraine and sinusitis headache pain often get worse when you lean forward. Several nasal signs and symptoms can also accompany migraines, including congestion, pressure on the face, and a watery discharge from the nose. These are due to the involvement of the autonomic nervous system in migraine attacks. Studies have shown that most people who see a healthcare provider for a sinus headache are found to have migraines instead.
Sinusitis, however, is not usually associated with nausea or vomiting or is aggravated by noise or bright light, all the common features of migraine.
Sinusitis usually:
- occurs after a viral respiratory infection or cold
